Cosmetic Sugery: Why Not To Go Under the Knife

On November 26th, 2010, Chinese star Wang Bei died shortly after her cosmetic surgery procedure. This was due to the surgeon`s improper operation technique that caused bleeding of her lower jaw, which flowed into her throat, resulting in suffocation. This is just one of the horrible accidents that can happen during cosmetic surgery. Yet, despite the risk, fifteen million people around the world go under the knife every year. Cosmetic surgery has hit twenty first century like a tsunami, whipping people in and not letting them out. Despite the benefits, cosmetic surgery can be highly addictive ...

Should we support Gay Marriage?

Should we support Gay Marriage? Should we support gay marriage? In my opinion why not? Why because they are still human, and don’t all humans deserve to love? Why people don’t agree there are many reasons why people who don’t support it, mainly religious groups. They don’t support it one bit. Why I Say It

One of my most powerful memories from elementary school is an all-school assembly in kindergarten. The principal asked everybody to stand, face the flag, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. I remember the boom of 600 voices saying these powerful words in unison. During that glorious moment, I felt proud. I felt proud to have recently mastered these tongue-twisting phrases. I felt proud to be a part of something so important. And, most of all, I felt proud to be an American. As I got older, the Pledge lost some of its glory and power for me. Some mornings, I go into patriotic cruise control. ...

Analyzing Affirmative Action

I got a thirty-six on my ACT. I also scored 2210 on my SAT, including a perfect 800 on the critical reading section. My GPA is 4.0, despite the fact that I’m taking four AP classes at a time, in addition to numerous honors courses. I’m enrolled in the concurrent enrollment program with my local community college and am well on my way to an associate’s degree before I’ve even graduated high school. I’m a member of the National Honor Society, a Science Olympian, and Editor-in-Chief of the school literary journal. I have over a hundred volunteer hours, I’m a published writer, and I was elect ...

Blurred Lines

“Dakota” is the name of two people in my first period English class; however, one is male and the other female. To keep things straight, our teacher lovingly refers to them as “He-kota” and “She-kota.” The other day, though, she made the mistake of giving the wrong pronoun to the male Dakota, and He-kota kicked up a fuss. As a joke, I turned around and asked, “Dakota, are you upset about being given the wrong pronoun because you see femininity as being inherently lesser?” in what my classmates probably view as my predictable feminist manner. A few chuckles were heard in the class. During this ...

Being a Great Citizen

Being an American is one of the greatest privileges that we are given in today's life. Having privileges that other countries have never heard of before. Being an American of The United States of America means that you support your military in the actions that they take part in. America is a great nation allowing you to keep all of your offspring that you have produced with your lovely spouse. Unlike as if you were in China then you are only aloud to have one child with your spouse. In china most of the families are in need of a male child to carry on the family name. So when they have a gir ...

Alone

Modern Western Society tells us that we, as people, should be constantly doing something. Learning, working, running, partying, watching television, Facebooking, e-mailing, text messaging, right up until the moment we fall asleep. We are constantly able to contact one another and be contacted. We feel like we are obligated to always be with someone. But take a step back from your world and escape for a while. Reconnect with yourself. Go down to the river, and sit all by yourself. Breathe in, breathe out. Feel the rock beneath your hands, the sun on your face. Look at the beauty surrounding yo ...

It's normal, right?

You awake to a beautiful day, feeling very confident and happy with yourself. Like normal, you retrieve a magazine from the counter and plop down on the couch. The cover story on the People magazine you hold in your hands reads, “Best and Worst Bodies of 2010.” You skim the pages and analyze their definition of hot, average, and disgusting bodies. Suddenly overcome by feelings of doubt and insecurity, you head to your room to take a good look in the mirror. Your reflection seems to insist that you are overweight. For the next couple days, you are continually bombarded by lies about what’s beau ...

Friendship Secrets

Should a friend have secrets to hide? Well, think about it this this way, if the whole secrecy, is your thing. Think about the dishonesty you are showing to your friend. Even if you pinky promise doesn't mean that you wouldn't tell some one else. Why say that your doing something when your not? Then lie about it, when your actually backstabbing a friend. This doesn't make since to me, that people say nice things in front of their friends, when, after when they're not around secrets float around and rumors spread. Yah thats what I call a trustworthy friend. You would never want this to ...

Bullying

We must take a stand against bullying. Bullying is one of the country’s worst problems and often leads to multiple, even worse problems in society today. One of the most recently prominent and increasingly frequent problems are the incidents in which children who are bullied throughout their lives come back to harm others, only because they are taking our their frustration of being made to feel different, inferior, or cast out. Some people don't take bullying seriously. They think it is just a normal part of life and that kids should have to learn how to handle it themselves. They do not re ...
